Internet2 Day at NJIT 2005

Introductions and Welcome

Dr. Don Sebastian, Sr. Vice President for Research and Development, NJIT welcomes NJIT faculty, staff and students as well as more than 50 participants from other NJ colleges.
David Ullman, Associate Provost for Information Services and Technology and CIO, NJIT, explains the intention of the day: To expose the NJIT community to the possibilities of Internet2 through demonstartions from NJIT to the the regional, nationally and internationally.

"Internet2's Advanced Applications in Support of Science & Engineering"

Charles Yun, Program Manager for Science and Engineering, Internet2

Charles Yun spoke about the ways in which advanced networking is currently being used to enhance and expand research and learning by Internet2 and the research community. He provided examples of some of the science "power users", such as the physics community, and also new users who are maturing in their use of the network.

"Developing A Research & Education Communities on Internet2"

Jennifer MacDougall, Applications Coordinator MAGPI GigaPoP

Jennifer MacDougall described the regional high performance network landscape, technology advancements and local resources available to faculty and staff. Using applications examples from institutions across the tri-state region and other national and international communities attendees seen what Internet2 initiatives are underway in the region and how they can start using advanced networking resources in the classroom and the lab.

LIVE CONNECTIONS TO REMOTE LOCATIONS

"Distributed Design Reviews"

Dr. Wassim Jabi, an Assistant Professor at the New Jersey School of Architecture, demonstrated the use of high bandwidth and Internet2 in distributed design reviews. The demonstration included the use of an Access Grid node, an interactive SmartBoard for real-time sharing and annotation of presentations, direct manipulation of shared 3D virtual models, and the use of real-time video and audio conferencing for a more natural and immersive review experience. The demo used a student project as a test case and be conducted in collaboration with Dr. Loukas Kalisperis and Professor George Otto from the School of Architecture at the Pennsylvania State University who will act as design reviewers.

“ Delivering Massive Geospatial Datasets for Educational Use”

Dr. Michael Huangs, Assistant Professor at CalPoly, Dept. of Computer Science, presented his work exploring how using Internet2 he provides access to remote massive (up to 22TB of data) orthophotography datasets for use in academia. Orthopothographs are aerial images, taken from either an airplane or satellite, transformed to account for picture skew and elevation. During this remote demonstration, he join us live using H.322 IP video and using TightVNC (Virtual Network Computing). He demonstrated how NJIT faculty and students might use the Internet2 connection to access the massive datasets for innovative lab use from departments that may not have considered its use.

"Collaborative e-Science in the UK"

The University of Manchester's presentation on the Access Grid Support Centre that they operate and support for the entire e-science community in the UK. The e-science community has many grid computing projects and uses Access Grid technology as the main collaboration tool. This included a telemedicine presentation.

Panel

A discussion of research opportunities using Internet2 with moderators Charles Yun and Jennifer MacDougall included NJIT faculty members: (LEFT TO RIGHT) Timothy Chang; William Spillers; Peter Petropoulos; Chris Funkhouser; Dale Gary; Chris Funkhouser; and Wassim Jabi.

Afternoon Small Group Sessions

“The Internet2 Commons” - a videoconferencing service for multi-site connections that is standards-based & vendor-neutral for working groups, classes, meetings, and conferences.
“Collaborative Tools” - Eric Hofer at the University of Michigan shares the tools used across the disciplines for internet2 collaboration via a videoconferencing connection with additional commentary from Jennifer MacDougall from MAGPI.
"Video Conferencing Basics" presented by NJIT's Frank Aversa went over what is needed here at NJIt to videoconference using Internet2.
